The Benefits of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is unique in that it is one of the few substances that your body can manufacture of its own accord simply with adequate exposure to sunlight. This vitamin is not a single substance, but is instead a group of related substances (including vitamins D1, D2 and D3) that are both vitamins and hormones. Vitamin D is essential for healthy bones and to maintain natural resistance to certain diseases. Although vitamin D is both manufactured within a person’s body and is naturally present in a number of different foods, a surprising number of individuals suffer from vitamin D deficiencies. This remains true even though vitamin D is fat soluble, which suggests that vitamin D will build up and remain stored in body tissue rather than being excreted with other water-soluble vitamins. Fortunately for those who are affected, vitamin D deficiencies are easily remedied.

The most significant recognized benefit of vitamin D is its ability to enhance absorption of calcium and phosphorous, both of which elements are necessary for healthy bone growth and strength. Individuals who suffer vitamin D deficiencies are more prone to developing osteoporosis (i.e., brittle and easily-broken bones) and other bone problems. Proper levels of vitamin D are also necessary to maintain a healthy immune system that can fight off common ailments, such as flus, and more serious problems such as multiple sclerosis and heart disease.

Long term and severe drug and alcohol addiction deprives the brain and body of natural vitamins like vitamin D. By causing malnutrition, malnourishment, often spending copious amounts of time intoxicated indoors, the addicted and alcoholic lifestyle depletes the body of vitamin D. Early recovery and rehabilitation from drug and alcohol addiction requires restoration of optimum health in body as well as mind. At Smarmore Castle Private Clinic, we encourage patients and therapists alike to take rehabilitation outside, into the sunshine and beautiful natural elements which surround our castle.

Individuals who have low vitamin D levels can take supplements to raise those levels and can alter their diets to increase their natural vitamin D intake. Foods such as salmon, eggs, and fortified milk and yogurt are rich sources of vitamin D.
