Smarmore Castle Private Clinic is hosting its first open day today with a keynote speech by internationally renowned Consultant Psychiatrist, Professor Jonathan Chick.
Smarmore Castle Private Clinic has been offering specialist in-patient treatment for people with alcoholism, drug addiction, gambling addiction and other addictions since the beginning of the year.
The medieval 14th-century Smarmore Castle has been renovated to create an impressive environment dedicated to addiction recovery. The inpatient clinic, based just outside Ardee in County Louth, features 22 beds, three stately communal areas, and a large leisure and fitness centre including a swimming pool, all on 15 acres of grounds. It is just a 45-minute drive from Dublin just off the main North/South MI/M2 motorways.

The new clinic was founded by the Directors of Castle Craig Hospital in Scotland, one of Europe’s leading addiction treatment hospitals.
“We are delighted to be combining over 30 years of expertise and our high success rates in the field of addiction with the exceptional facilities here at Smarmore,” said Peter McCann, a Trinity College Dublin graduate and co-founder of Smarmore Castle and Castle Craig Hospital. “We are committed to tackling alcoholism and drug addiction and the suffering it brings to families and we are committed to widening the range of treatment options for addictions in Ireland”.
The model of care has been developed over 30 years by Dr Margaret Ann McCann a University College Dublin graduate, and co-founder of both Castle Craig and Smarmore Castle Private Clinic.
Patients at Smarmore Castle Private Clinic are under the care of a highly experienced medical team, including Consultant Psychiatrist, Dr Helen Barry and Addiction Specialists, Dr Hugh Gallagher and Dr David McGrath as well as clinical psychologist Nathan Rogerson, who is the clinic’s manager.
Treatment includes medical and psychiatric assessment, detoxification as well as special therapies including 12-step facilitation and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). The complementary therapies on offer include equine (horse) therapy, aqua yoga and fitness instruction. Aftercare programmes along with family support are an integral element of the programme.
