Smarmore Castle Drug & Alcohol Rehab
At Smarmore Castle, Ireland, our approach to addiction treatment is trauma-informed. We don’t just find out ‘what’s wrong with you’ – we find out ‘what happened to you’. During our biopsychosocial assessments we build up a complete picture of you as a person – your history and past and present life situations.
What is Trauma?
A study of adolescents receiving treatment for drug and alcohol addiction in the US found that more than 70% of them had a history of trauma exposure.A traumatic event is one in which you perceive a threat to your life or sanity. Examples include childhood neglect or abuse, domestic violence, a violent event such as rape, an accident, military combat, terrorism as well as emotional and physical abuse, illness and complex grief. Experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which makes it hard for you to form and maintain healthy relationships, and can cause or complicate alcoholism or drug addiction.
Research shows there is a strong link between trauma and addiction. Alcohol and drugs are often abused as a coping mechanism following psychological symptoms of trauma and PTSD may be a cause of relapse if left untreated.

- My Loved One Doesn’t Want Help, What Do I Do?
You can’t force someone to go to rehab. At the end of the day, it needs to be their decision because they are the ones that need to be open to turning their lives around. There are ways in which you can encourage someone to enter treatment, one of these ways is via an intervention with a trained interventionist, who facilitates an honest discussion between family members and the addict. This is something Smarmore Castle can arrange – contact us today.
