Newtownabbey Alcohol and Drug Abuse
In 2014, an estimated 170,000 people drank at dangerous levels in Northern Ireland. This can have dire consequences; alcohol binges accounted for 12,000 admissions to hospital in 2011/12. Newtownabbey, and the Northern region of the country, had the second lowest rates of alcohol consumption compared to other regions in Northern Ireland in 2011. This was reflected in the low rate of alcohol-related deaths in Newtownabbey and the northern region in 2009 relative to other areas of the country (12.7 per 100,000).
Of drug users admitted to treatment in 2014/15, cannabis was the most widely used drug across all regions of Northern Ireland. This was particularly true for the northern area including Newtownabbey, where 79% of those in treatment had used cannabis. Of those treated in the Newtownabbey area, 27% had used cocaine. Use of opioid pain-relief drugs was most prevalent among patients in the Newtownabbey area compared to other regions of Northern Ireland, with 28% having tried these drugs before.

Our Addiction Treatment Programme
The addiction treatment model at Smarmore Castle has been developed over 30 years by a world-renowned team of doctors and psychologists. Our residential rehabilitation treatment programme is based on the clinically proven rehab treatment model pioneered by Castle Craig, our partner establishment in Scotland.
We provide an intensive rehab programme that follows the 12 Steps Model and offers a quick admissions process. On arrival, patients receive a thorough medical assessment and physical examination. They then begin a period of detoxification from alcohol and drugs, under the close supervision of our medical team.
Our core programme incorporates specialist therapies including individual therapy, group therapy, CBT, Trauma therapy, grief therapy, and family therapy. Dual diagnosis treatment is offered to patients suffering from psychological conditions such as eating disorders and depression, alongside a primary diagnosis of drug and alcohol addiction.
Our holistic approach to treatment also encompasses complementary addiction therapies, such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy, equine therapy and drumming therapy.
During their leisure time, patients can enjoy access to our indoor heated swimming pool, sauna and steam room, gym and sports with our fitness instructor. They can explore the 16 acres of scenic private gardens surrounding The Castle.
When the patient completes their treatment, they are provided with a continuing care plan to help ensure their sustained recovery. We continue to support patients after they re-enter their daily lives, with weekly group therapy meetings, and a programme of teletherapy sessions.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy at Smarmore Castle
Patients suffering from alcohol and drug addiction often experience unhelpful thought patterns, coupled with negative attitudes and behaviours.
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a talking therapy that helps patients to identify their recurring negative thoughts and deconstruct them, rendering them less powerful and consequently reducing their impact on the patient’s behaviour. The patient will also be helped to devise coping strategies for difficult encounters with either people or stimuli which could trigger negative emotions and the desire to consume alcohol or drugs.
CBT provides the patient with invaluable insight into their own psychology and behaviour. It equips them with the necessary coping mechanisms to ensure the best possible recovery, and their sustained abstinence.

- My Loved One Doesn’t Want Help, What Do I Do?
You can’t force someone to go to rehab. At the end of the day, it needs to be their decision because they are the ones that need to be open to turning their lives around. There are ways in which you can encourage someone to enter treatment, one of these ways is via an intervention with a trained interventionist, who facilitates an honest discussion between family members and the addict. This is something Smarmore Castle can arrange – contact us today.
