How Mindfulness Meditation Works
Focusing on the here and now and acknowledging and accepting thoughts and feelings as they present is at the heart of mindfulness. Patients become skilled in recognising and detaching from negative feelings, rather than seeking a release via damaging behaviours, leading to a higher level of self-awareness.
Mindfulness and the Brain
Scientific research has shown that mindfulness can thicken the right pre-frontal cortex of the brain, the part most damaged by alcohol and drug misuse, and the area responsible for awareness, creativity, well-being and decision making.
