Deciding to seek help can be challenging, but we will support you at every stage, providing the information and guidance you need. In addition, every patient receives a free pre-admission assessment.
You can join the treatment programme at the Smarmore Castle as a private self-funding patient or if you have private medical insurance then this may contribute towards the cost of your inpatient addiction treatment, depending on your provider and plan. You can also access treatment via the HSE.
Funding Options Ireland and International
Initial contact and referrals do not need to come through a patient’s GP or psychiatrist.
- We accept self-referrals from the patient, family members, employers, or other relevant professionals.
- We admit and accept patients from Ireland, the UK, The EU and internationally.
- Patients either pay for treatment privately, through private medical insurance or via a statutory funder such as the HSE.
Once we establish the type of funding, our admissions team will be able to move on to the free pre-admission assessment.
Free Pre-Admission Assessments
Every person considering admission receives a free comprehensive pre-admission assessment over the phone before entering treatment.
The assessment is led and managed by our experienced admissions team and is easy to arrange. All details are recorded confidentially.
This telephone assessment is important because it is our opportunity to find out more about you, your history with alcohol or drugs, and your current situation. It is also your opportunity to ask us any other questions you might have about our treatment programme. From the information you provide us with in this assessment we can ensure that we are well-placed to meet your needs.
Our assessments can be carried out immediately or a time for a call-back will be arranged with one of admissions staff. It usually takes around 30 minutes to complete and will then need to be reviewed by our clinical team who ensure that we are the right fit for your needs, and who also might come back with some additional questions if your needs are more complex.
Once the assessment has been completed, our admissions team will be in touch to confirm a date for your admission to rehab, or if for some reason we feel that treatment at Smarmore Castle wouldn’t meet your needs, we will do our best to give you a recommendation of another healthcare provider who could help.

Smarmore Castle receives many patients from abroad and our treatment is covered by a number of international insurers. Our admissions staff are always happy to answer any enquiries regarding admissions or any general questions.
Our admissions staff operate as a first point of contact for all enquiries about treatment at Smarmore Castle Private Clinic. In addition, they can advise prospective patients, families, and referrers on questions about our admission arrangements.
Convenient Location near Dublin and Belfast
Smarmore Castle Private Clinic is conveniently situated 45 minutes from Dublin International Airport and 1 hour and a half from Belfast International Airport.
We can also provide a transport service for patients travelling to Smarmore from Dublin or Belfast at an additional cost, our advisors will be able to help you over the phone with any questions pertaining to getting to Smarmore and back from your location.

Self-funded clients from the Republic of Ireland may qualify to claim tax relief on the cost of their health expenses.
These can be their private health expenses, those of a family member or any individual’s, as long as they were paid for by the applicant claiming relief.
