I started in Smarmore Castle as a Chef in May 2018 and I really enjoyed serving the patients from the start, and unknown to myself, I started connecting with the patients on a deeper level, leading me to realise that I had a problem with Addiction and so October 2018 became the start of my journey in recovery to this present day. I have gotten my recovery through the 12-step programme of AA and in December 2020 I started working in Smarmore Castle as a Recovery Advocate. This is the most rewarding job I have ever had because I have such a passion for recovery, as it is freely available to everyone if they really want it.
It is a huge privilege to be part of the Smarmore Castle team and to be part of a patient’s journey in their early recovery when they are broken, scared and unaware of what recovery has to offer them. Recovery has given me my life back and my families and it is a privilege to be able to give back to someone starting off on their journey. “Recovery has given me the tools of how to become the person I was born to be”.
