Introduction

Alcohol dependence was most common for 18-24-year-olds (14.7%). Over-consumption of alcohol has tragic results, with the rate of alcohol-related liver disease trebling in Ireland between 1995 and 2013.

Drug use among young people in Ireland is growing, with the use of ecstasy among 15-24 year olds quadrupling between 2011 and 2015. In 2016, Ireland came near the top among a number of countries in terms of medical problems caused by ecstasy and alcohol.
The South East region of Ireland, including Wexford, had the highest number of problem drug users treated between 2005-2010 compared to the rest of Ireland. In Wexford in 2008, heroin was the second most commonly abused drug following alcohol. In Ireland, drug-related deaths have shown an upward trend between 2009 and 2014.
