Deciding to seek help with your drinking is one of the bravest decisions you can make. Alcohol is by far one of the hardest drugs to give up for several reasons. Firstly, drinking alcohol is a huge part of our culture and everyday life, but more importantly, coming off alcohol can be dangerous without the support of medical professionals.

You are not alone in your journey towards recovery and change is possible. For many years, we have witnessed thousands of people transform their lives, and we know first-hand that alcohol rehab treatment is the best way to overcome chronic drinking problems.

On this page, we help you understand treatment options, the alcohol rehab process and what to expect when attending our alcohol rehab clinic.

What is Alcohol Rehab?

Alcohol rehab or alcohol rehabilitation, is the medical and therapeutic treatment process specifically designed to help individuals quit drinking safely. From experience, we understand alcoholism to be a disease that needs managing in the same way other illnesses do. Complete and total abstinence is the most effective way to get there.

At Smarmore, we offer comprehensive treatment provided by experienced staff. Our medical and therapeutic teams will be here to guide you through the journey ahead with the support of our wider community.

It’s important to understand that alcohol rehab is most effective when the patient is fully committed to seeking help. You have to be ready and open to change to reap the benefits it offers. If you are ready to tackle your problematic alcohol use, reach out to our compassionate team today to take the first step.

Alcohol Rehab Treatment Options

There are two primary modes of treatment when it comes to alcohol rehab, residential treatment (inpatient treatment) and outpatient treatment.

Residential alcohol rehab programmes, such as those offered at Smarmore, require you to stay at our centre for the duration of treatment. This option provides different benefits to outpatient care:

  1. Your detox is included as part of the treatment. Withdrawal symptoms will be safely managed by our medical team on-site.
  2. You will not be exposed to stressors or triggers that contribute to your drinking habits.
  3. You will not have the ability to drink alcohol and will therefore not have to worry about relapse.
  4. Your treatment is fully integrated. Our intensive programme gives you the best start to your recovery journey.
  5. You will have access to our facilities, enjoy healthy food, and have a comfortable place to rest in the safety and privacy of our centre.

At Smarmore, we believe in a holistic approach to treatment. We understand that alcoholism has a devastating impact on personal lives, careers and relationships. Our evidence-based approach in conjunction with our therapeutic environment treats addiction at its core for optimal recovery. Being part of our community is crucial to the recovery process, and we want all patients to feel safe and connected. Some of our therapists have attended alcohol rehab themselves, and know how important connection is in recovery.

For those who have completed inpatient care, outpatient treatment – which includes therapy – offers an additional layer of protection in the early stages of recovery. However, it’s important to note that outpatient services do not offer a supervised detox, making it unsuitable for those with a moderate to severe alcohol use disorder.

Treatment Lengths

Another key point to consider is the length of your alcohol rehab treatment. Longer treatment durations have been found to produce better outcomes, this is especially true for those with severe dependence or those with pre-existing mental health conditions. Once you leave the safety of rehab, being solid and grounded in your recovery will be your biggest strength against difficult challenges in life.

At Smarmore, our programmes run for a minimum of four weeks. We believe this gives our patients the optimal start they need. Some patients choose to stay longer to work on their recovery.

The Three Stages of Alcohol Rehab

The programme at Smarmore covers all three stages of the alcohol rehab process:

  • Detoxification
  • Therapeutic Treatment
  • Continuing Care

Alcohol detox addresses the physical nature of alcohol dependence, allowing your body to recover from the impact of alcohol abuse. A medically assisted alcohol detox may be offered to patients to help alleviate severe withdrawal syndrome.

Due to how heavy use of alcohol affects the brain, it can be dangerous to stop drinking on your own. You can seek advice from our team if you are struggling with alcohol dependency.

Expert Addiction Treatment & Detox

Smarmore Castle Clinic is One of Ireland’s Leading Treatment Centres for Drug & Alcohol Addiction

At the beginning of alcohol rehab at Smarmore Castle, the team will provide you with a thorough clinical assessment to ensure treatment is focused and appropriate diagnoses are made. At this point, one of our consultant psychiatrists will create a personalised treatment plan for you. This takes into account your history of alcohol use as well as any additional needs you may have.

Your treatment plan will include one-to-one therapy and individual counselling, peer support groups, and twelve-step meetings to help you understand your condition and behaviour, find freedom and prevent relapse.

Cognitive behavioural therapy is widely used in addiction treatment. CBT helps people identify what needs to be changed in their lives, and through working collaboratively with therapists and others in a treatment group, individuals begin to implement these changes.

If you’re struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which is characterised by symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and intrusive images, EMDR may be recommended. This is an innovative treatment that can help you to process negative memories and emotions that have been suppressed.

Group therapy builds self-awareness and insight through sharing stories and being open with your peers. The groups work together, empathise with and support each other. The positive changes seen in others can inspire hope.

Group therapy, facilitated by our trained therapists, is an integral part of our treatment programme.

Aftercare and continuing care is the third stage of alcohol rehab and is offered to all patients who complete a residential programme with us. Aftercare is the most important part of alcohol addiction treatment, designed to support patients as they return to their daily lives.

Our free aftercare includes group therapy sessions for up to a year, building on the core principles learnt during alcohol rehab. Patients will also have the opportunity to join our alumni which includes regular check-ins, social events and reunions.

Supporting Loved Ones During Alcohol Rehab

Those who do not suffer from addiction, will not be able to understand the pain of living with alcohol addiction. The more families know about addiction and understand how to support recovery, the better chance individuals have of finding lasting recovery. However, addiction is a family illness and it is common for support networks to be deeply affected by a loved one’s alcohol use disorder and need support themselves. Our family therapy programme helps patients and families to connect and share their feelings of shame, hurt and anger, rebuild damaged relationships, learn to communicate effectively, and educate families on the disease of alcohol addiction.

  • My Loved One Doesn’t Want Help, What Do I Do?

You can’t force someone to go to rehab. A person must be ready to commit to treatment if they want to get the most out of the programme. However, there are ways in which you can encourage someone to enter rehab, one of these ways is via an intervention with a trained interventionist, who facilitates an honest discussion between family members and the individual. This is something Smarmore Castle can arrange – contact us today.

  • Which Drugs Does Smarmore Castle Detox From?

We offer detox from any drug, whether they are illegal drugs such as cocaine, heroin, ketamine; or prescription drugs such as benzodiazepines or zopiclone, oxycodone, zolpidem, klonopin, methadone, cannabis; and legal drugs such as alcohol.
